“In fact, I propose it would probably be necessary for us to change the name of the town simply because Letchworth would object strongly to us claiming to be a Garden City.” Tony Skottowe, chair of the Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust previously said: “What the effect of this if it went through, in our opinion, is it would destroy the Garden City. The changes to this cap and other buildings being proposed in the area would threaten the town's heritage, according to campaigners. Until recently there had been a cap on any buildings taller than five storeys, in order to avoid the rapid growth of its neighbours. However, the new proposals will see flats built up to 10 storeys high - significantly higher than any other buildings in the town centre. The paint on the 'Shredded Wheat' sign has almost entirely faded, windows are smashed, and a few silos have already been demolished. While the rest of the town is neat and kept in a very uniform state, it stands out as one of the spots which has seen better days. The Howard Centre and main plazas are all immaculately preserved, there's incredible views right through the town from Parkway, and there's of course the old Nabisco factory.
